Section 125

Section 125 plans allow employees to set aside part of their pay for qualified medical or dependent care expenses. The deduction for contributions to a Section 125 plan are made pretax, which reduces the amount of tax owed for both the employee and the employer.

  • Premium only plans (POP) allow employees to pay for health insurance premiums with pretax dollars.
  • Flexible spending accounts or flexible spending arrangements (FSA) allow employees to pay for qualified health care costs with earnings that are not taxed.
  • Health reimbursement arrangements (HRA) are funded by the employer and used by the employee to pay for qualified medical expenses. Employer contributions to an HRA are tax deductible and are also not taxable for the employee.
  • Dependent care plans allow employees to set aside tax free dollars for use on qualified dependent care expenses such as child or adult day care.

Section 132
